Liu YuXi 刘禹锡

Born: 772 CE (Luoyang, Henan Province)
Died: 842 CE (???)
Dynasty: Tang

At the age of twenty, Liu Yuxi passed the imperial examination.  He was a contemporary of Liu Zongyuan and Bai Juyi.  Though a talented poet and philosopher, his political inclinations (he opposed the political power of the eunuchs) and satirical poetry mocking officials led to frequent banishment from the capital.  He was especially interested in folk customs and used folk songs as inspiration for new poetic styles.
