Died: 819 CE (Dangtu, Anwei Province)
Dynasty: Tang

Liu ZongYuan was a Tang Dynasty official.  His civil service career was initially successful, but after being associated with a failed reform movement, he fell out of favor.  He was exiled to the south, first to Hunan province and then to Guangxi province.  After moving, however, his literary career flourished.  Some works celebrate his freedom from office, others mourn his banishment.  Roughly 180 of his poems are still extant.
